Project BIRA - Brincadeiras Infantis da Região Amazônica or Children’s Games in the Amazon Region is an independent effort to research and share children’s culture. Educator Renata Meirelles and documentarian David Reeks began the project in 2001, setting out on an expedition to introduce themselves to 16 riverside and indigenous communities. The BIRA team spent much of that time playing with the children in each community, establishing a cultural exchange. Meirelles and Reeks would not only ask about and learn new games, but they would also teach the children any games, songs, and toymaking they had learned along the way. Today, BIRA continues to celebrate diversity by bringing cultures together with play: the team leads presentations and workshops in schools and in cultural institutions in the United States and Brazil, teaching kids and adults about the Amazon’s songs, games, and toys.
